BEHIND THE NUMBER

Simple by intention.

Your annual living expenses are divided by an assumed 2.5% annual withdrawal rate: 12 × monthly expenses ÷ 2.5% = 480 × monthly expenses. The formula then adds the remaining cost of raising children, a healthcare reserve, and major expenses. The amount you’ve already set aside reduces the gap, not the target.

The 480 multiplier comes from the assumed rate, not a fixed 40-year spending period. This simplified estimate does not model inflation, investment returns, taxes, pensions, or changes in spending, and does not guarantee how long your money will last. Avoid counting the same cost in more than one field. Example amounts are placeholders, not recommendations. This tool is for general planning, not financial advice.
